OpenAI, Google DeepMind Employees Raise Alarm on AI Risks and Urge for Stronger Oversight

In a significant development, current and former employees of leading AI companies, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, have issued an open letter highlighting the serious risks posed by advanced AI technologies and the insufficient oversight within the industry.   1. No Non-Disparagement Agreements: Companies should not enforce agreements that prohibit employees from criticizing the company regarding risk-related concerns. The signatories include notable former OpenAI employees like Daniel Kokotajlo, Jacob Hilton, William Saunders, Carroll Wainwright, and Daniel Ziegler, as well as current and former Google DeepMind employees.

In response to the letter, an OpenAI spokesperson acknowledged the importance of rigorous debate on AI safety and stated that the company would continue to engage with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders globally. OpenAI also mentioned its internal mechanisms for reporting safety concerns, including an anonymous integrity hotline and a Safety and Security Committee.

The open letter comes amidst a series of controversies and internal challenges faced by OpenAI. In May, the company retracted a controversial decision requiring former employees to sign non-disparagement agreements to retain their vested equity.
