OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Pro: A Premium Subscription for Advanced AI Capabilities

OpenAI has unveiled its most advanced subscription tier yet, ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200 per month. This premium plan offers unlimited access to OpenAI’s most powerful AI models, including the newly enhanced o1 reasoning model, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice capabilities. The introduction of ChatGPT Pro marks a significant step forward in providing cutting-edge AI tools to researchers, engineers, and other professionals who rely on advanced AI capabilities for their work.

The o1 model, previously known by its codename “Strawberry,” has been updated to deliver faster, more accurate responses, particularly in complex tasks such as data science, programming, and case law analysis. The model’s advanced reasoning capabilities allow it to “think” longer and provide more reliable answers, a feature that sets it apart from previous iterations.

“The new ChatGPT Pro option will cost $200 a month and offer access to an expanded version of o1, its reasoning model,” OpenAI announced during a livestreamed event. This model is designed to perform human-like reasoning tasks more efficiently, addressing some of the pitfalls that typically challenge AI models.

One of the standout features of ChatGPT Pro is the o1 pro mode, which uses additional computational power to tackle the most challenging questions. This mode is specifically designed to provide the best possible answers by leveraging more compute resources. According to evaluations from external expert testers, o1 pro mode produces more reliably accurate and comprehensive responses, particularly in specialized fields.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the benefits of the Pro tier, stating, “A lot of people, power users of ChatGPT at this point—they really use it a lot, and they want more compute than $20 a month can buy. Pro has unlimited access to our models and also things like advanced voice mode.”

The new subscription tier is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to offset the high costs associated with developing advanced AI models. The company has been working to convince customers and businesses to invest in its software, which includes the more affordable ChatGPT Plus subscription at $20 per month.

In addition to the o1 model, ChatGPT Pro subscribers will have access to GPT-4o and Advanced Voice Mode, enhancing the overall user experience. The plan also includes future productivity features that are expected to be more powerful and compute-intensive.

OpenAI’s announcement kicks off a series of product events dubbed “12 Days of OpenAI,” where the company plans to unveil a range of new features and tools. This holiday-themed rollout is expected to showcase OpenAI’s latest advancements and innovations in the AI space.

While the $200 monthly subscription fee has drawn criticism for being too expensive for the average user, OpenAI is targeting power users who require the most advanced AI capabilities. The company also plans to award 10 grants of ChatGPT Pro to medical researchers at leading institutions, with additional grants planned across various disciplines.
