Arival Bank Nets $2.3 Million in Equity Crowdfunding Campaign

FinovateAsia 2018 Best of Show winner Arival Bank announced this week that it raised $2.3 million (£1.87 million) in a pre-Series A, equity crowdfunding campaign. The Singapore-based fintech bank for businesses and entrepreneurs soared past its fundraising target of $864,500 (£700,000), and now boasts a pre-money valuation of more than $14.8 million (£12 million). Curve smashes crowdfunding record in minutes with £5m overfund

Over-the-top banking platform Curve has become the fastest start-up to reach £4 million on Crowdcube and has raised overfunding of more than £5 million, reports Jane Connolly.

Within 42 minutes of launching on the crowdfunding platform to pre-registered customers, Curve attracted four times its original £1 million target, smashing Crowdcube’s existing record.

Curve also broke the record for the number of people investing in a campaign through Crowdcube, which was previously held by Chip with around 6,500 investors. (more…)

Crypto Friendly Digital Bank Arival Accepting Investment Reservations on SeedInvest for Upcoming Crowdfunding Round

Digital challenger bank Arival is now accepting reservations for preferred stock on SeedInvest.

Arival will be a crypto-friendly bank – unlike most traditional banks in the United States which tend to be crypto-averse.

The bank was founded on the notion that banks in many places around the world are closing accounts of crypto-related businesses as they are fearful of any collateral ramifications to holding these types of accounts. Arival says they surveyed “hundreds” of Fintech and blockchain startups in their network and 90% indicated they have encountered problems in some capacity.

But it is not only the crypto-sector that Arival wants to service. The digital-only bank wants to provide banking services to all SMEs and GIG economy companies seeking an alternative to the high cost, low service, experience of traditional brick and mortar banks. (more…)

Crowdfunding Enters New Era

WIRED: The UK is a “world leader” in equity crowdfunding, with further democratisation set to open up everything from hedge funds to IPOs in the next few years. Speaking at WIRED Money 2015 Darren Westlake, co-founder and CEO of leading investment crowdfunding platform Crowdcube, said the future of crowdfunding in the UK and around the world was “more democratisation”. “Crowdfunding platforms are well positioned” to “put the P back into IPO,” he explained, pointing to the success of Crowdcube’s existing equity system as an example of public interest.

Crowdfunding For Small Firms

The Economist: Crowdfunding is just one of a number of ways in which European SMEs, typically far more reliant on bank financing than their American counterparts (see chart), are trying to compensate for the continuing decline in bank lending. Others include issuing publicly tradable debt or equity; placing securities privately with institutional investors; and accepting loans from non-bank financial institutions (“shadow banks”). Banks and others are also securitising loans to SMEs (ie, pooling them, dividing the pool into tranches with different degrees of risk, and selling the resulting securities to investors). Governments are keen to promote all this, to limit the economic harm done by sickly banks.  (more…)
