Jeremy Allaire’s Bitcoin Startup Circle Takes $50M From Goldman Sachs, IDG

TECHCRUNCHCircle, the Bitcoin startup that veteran entrepreneur Jeremy Allaire started, just raised $50 million from Goldman Sachs and IDG Capital Partners. It’s another sign that the finance industry’s most powerful players are starting to take the crypto-currency and its ecosystem seriously. All of Circle’s existing investors including Breyer Capital, General Catalyst Partners, Accel Partners, Oak Investment Partners, Fenway Summer, Digital Currency Group and Pantera Capital participated. Rival Coinbase recently did a large growth round too that involved the New York Stock Exchange and USAA. (more…)

MONOCLE: With a “strategic co-operation partnership” in place, China has stood by Sri Lanka when its human-rights record has come under question. And when the former president needed help constructing the port and airport he built in his hometown of Hambantota, it was China he turned to. Beijing sees Sri Lanka as crucial to the development of its Maritime Silk Road, with the island’s south coast lying a few miles from the shipping lanes that could connect China with India and oil-producer Iran. Air China’s new Chengdu-Colombo service, which runs four times a week, was no doubt developed to capitalise on the close relationship between the two nations. Bigcommerce Acquires Checkout And Inventory Software Startup Zing

TECHCRUNCH: E-commerce platform Bigcommerce announced today that it has made its first acquisition, point-of-sale and inventory management software startup Zing. The value of the deal was undisclosed. Bigcommerce has raised $125 million so far from investors including General Catalyst, Softbank, and American Express, and is pursuing rapid growth in the U.S. and Asia. It faces formidable competition, however, from other e-commerce platforms like Shopify (which recently filed for a $100 million IPO) and Magento, as well as marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon that target smaller vendors. 2C2P Raises $7M To Bridge The Payment Gap In Southeast Asia

E27.CO: The Indian startup ecosystem is going through a frenzied time, with VC investment deals spurting in the first four months of the current calendar year.
